Lights and Sirens
Gabrielle Cleaveland
I understand that
When you hear the sirens blare
You are unaware of our silent Prayer
But we have met before
In more way then one
We are the people who show up
At your door when you call 911
Catastrophes and crises
Danger and death
We were there
When you were out of breath
Target by Terrorism
And now are own people too
All because of the color blue
Jeopardized and pledged
By the uniforms and vehicles we drive
Just trying to keep our patience alive
But
We are seen as the brothers and sisters
Of the blue line
And unfortunately this is putting my people
On the front line
Caught in the cross fire
Of two wrongs trying to make a right
At the end of the day we are left
With the casualties after the fight
The reality is we are the ones haunted
By the fact
We may not make it back one night
Lights and sirens
I can’t tell you half the things I’ve seen
Lights and sirens
I’m pulling up on the scene
Lights and sirens
I have a target on my back
Lights and sirens
I pray no one will attack
These Lights and sirens are now
Something the people fear
It’s no wonder less and less are
Starting to volunteer
We now wear bullet proof vest to protect our chest
But nothing is left to protect our breath
Because we are breathing in
And breaking down our
Hearts are tearing every time they pound
Because we were the ones
Who found that in city ground
Bleeding out on the ground
Shot at a routine traffic stop
We were the ones who also had to treat the critically beaten up cop
That College bound child
And that father of four
Both lost because of this war
But there is so much more
Cause we are living in a place where they hate us and everything we stand for
A land where my brothers and sisters
Are dying for others
Who don’t care anymore
I get this is all way too easy to ignore
That is until
We have to show up at your door
